UK Standard Visitor Visa Checklist (2026): Every Document You Need

By Petter Vance (Lead Caseworker & Compliance Auditor) •
Key Takeaways for Applicants A complete, up-to-date document checklist for the UK Standard Visitor Visa in 2026. Covers passport requirements, financial evidence, employment letters, accommodation proof, ties to home country and sponsor documents — with practical tips on what caseworkers actually look for.

What Is the UK Standard Visitor Visa?

The UK Standard Visitor Visa allows individuals from non-visa-free countries to visit the United Kingdom for up to 6 months at a time for purposes including tourism, visiting family or friends, attending business meetings, short courses (under 6 months), and private medical treatment. It is granted under Appendix V of the UK Immigration Rules.

According to GOV.UK, the standard processing time is around 3 weeks (15 working days), with a Priority Service option of approximately 5 working days available at an additional cost.

The Core Legal Test: What Caseworkers Are Looking For

Every application is assessed against four statutory pillars under Appendix V of the Immigration Rules:

  1. Genuine Visitor: You genuinely intend to visit for the stated purpose and will leave before your visa expires.
  2. No Intention to Work or Access Public Funds: You will not take employment or rely on public assistance during your stay.
  3. Sufficient Funds: You can cover your travel, accommodation and living expenses without financial assistance from the UK government.
  4. Compelling Ties to Home Country: You have reasons — employment, property, family — that will bring you back home before your visa expires.

Every document in your file should speak to at least one of these four pillars. If it does not, question whether to include it.

Complete Document Checklist

1. Passport and Identity

  • Current valid passport — must be valid for the duration of your stay. Include all previous passports if they contain relevant visa stamps (especially US, Canadian, or previous UK visas).
  • Two recent passport photographs — 45mm × 35mm, plain white or off-white background, taken within the last 6 months.

2. Financial Evidence

  • 6 months of official bank statements — printed on bank letterhead or downloaded from your bank's official portal, showing your name, account number, branch details and all transactions. Online printouts are accepted if they carry the bank's digital certification.
  • Consistent salary credits — your statement should show regular income matching your stated employment. Large unexplained lump-sum deposits are a major red flag and should be explained with documentation (gift letters, property sale completion statements, business income evidence).
  • Savings account statements — if you are demonstrating savings in addition to current account funds.
  • Evidence of property or assets — land title deeds, vehicle registration, or investment account statements can supplement financial evidence.

3. Employment and Income Proof

  • Employer letter on company letterhead — must state: your full name, job title, start date, annual or monthly salary (convert to GBP if relevant), confirmation that you are a permanent or long-term employee, your approved leave dates, and a named HR or line manager contact with a direct telephone number.
  • Last 3 months payslips — cross-referenced with your bank statement salary credits. The figures must match.
  • If self-employed: Certificate of business registration, last 2 years' tax returns (or equivalent in your country), business bank statements, and an accountant letter.
  • If a student: Enrollment letter from your university, scholarship award letter if applicable, and evidence your course continues beyond your planned travel dates (showing you will return).
  • If retired: Pension statements or pension fund documents, and property ownership or savings evidence.

4. Purpose of Visit and Itinerary

  • Cover letter / personal statement — a clear, concise explanation of your reason for visiting, who you will be with, where you will stay, and how you will fund the trip. This does not need to be long — one to two pages. Avoid exaggerated language.
  • Invitation letter (if visiting friends or family) — written by your UK-based host, confirming your relationship, the purpose of your visit, where you will stay and for how long.
  • Evidence of activities booked — conference registration, tour bookings, or event tickets strengthen the genuine visitor purpose.

5. Accommodation

  • Hotel bookings — confirmed reservations covering every night of your stay. A cancellable booking showing the dates and your name is sufficient — you do not need to pay in full in advance.
  • Sponsor's accommodation evidence — if staying with a UK contact: their signed letter plus proof of their address (recent council tax bill, mortgage statement, utility bill) and proof of their immigration status or citizenship.

6. Travel Arrangements

  • Return flight reservation — an active booking with your passenger name, travel dates, flight numbers and a PNR (Passenger Name Record) code that can be verified on the airline website. Do not purchase non-refundable tickets until your visa is approved.

7. Ties to Home Country (Critical)

This is the most scrutinised part of any first-time applicant's file. Evidence can include:

  • Property ownership documents (title deeds or mortgage statements) — showing you own real estate in your home country.
  • Employer letter confirming you are expected back at work on a specific date.
  • Proof of children or spouse remaining at home (school enrolment letters, birth certificates).
  • Business registration documents showing you are an active business owner.
  • Agricultural land records or tenancy agreements.

Without strong ties evidence, caseworkers may question whether you intend to overstay — even if your finances are impeccable.

8. Sponsor Documents (If Applicable)

  • Sponsor's UK passport or BRP card copy.
  • Sponsor's proof of address (dated within 3 months).
  • Sponsor's 3 months bank statements if they are contributing to your costs.
  • Signed declaration from the sponsor confirming they will cover your accommodation and, where relevant, expenses.

9. Previous Travel History

  • Copies of visas from the US, Canada, Australia, Schengen area, or any previous UK visas — particularly those that show you left on time. This builds a compliance track record.

What NOT to Include

  • Documents in a foreign language without a certified English translation.
  • Irrelevant personal documents that add bulk without addressing the four statutory pillars.
  • Altered or edited bank statements — these constitute fraud and result in a ban from the UK.
