How to Prepare Bank Statements for a UK Visitor Visa (2026 Guide)

By Jack Sterling (Senior Visa Specialist) •
Key Takeaways for Applicants Bank statements are the most scrutinised part of any UK visitor visa application. This guide explains what Home Office caseworkers look for, how to handle large deposits, what counts as 'funds parking', how much you need to show, and practical examples of statements that pass — and statements that fail.

Why Bank Statements Are So Important

The UK Home Office does not publish a minimum balance requirement for the Standard Visitor Visa. Instead, Entry Clearance Officers (ECOs) assess whether your financial position is proportionate to your trip and consistent over time. This makes the quality and presentation of your bank statements just as important as the figures themselves.

This guide is for applicants under Appendix V of the UK Immigration Rules — the Standard Visitor Visa. For Student or Skilled Worker visas, different financial rules apply.

What the Home Office Actually Looks For

ECOs assess your statements across four key areas:

  1. Consistency of income — Does your salary credit appear every month at the expected amount? Random or irregular income patterns raise questions.
  2. Average closing balance — Is your closing balance consistently positive and proportionate to your trip cost? A £200 average balance for a two-week London trip costing £3,000 is implausible.
  3. Unexplained deposits — Large sums appearing shortly before you apply, without explanation, are classified as 'funds parking' — borrowing money temporarily to inflate your balance.
  4. Spending pattern — Irregular spending (e.g. no food expenses, no utility payments, no transport costs) suggests the account may not be your primary account, which raises authenticity concerns.

How Much Should You Show?

There is no official minimum, but as a practical benchmark used by many immigration advisers:

  • Cover the full estimated cost of your trip: flights + accommodation + daily living (approximately £100–150 per day in London, £70–100 outside London) + a buffer.
  • Your closing balance should be stable — not artificially elevated in the final weeks before application.
  • A proportionality test applies: if your trip costs £5,000 and your monthly income is £800, the ECO will question the economic plausibility, regardless of the balance.

The 'Funds Parking' Problem — Practical Examples

Example A: Funds Parking (Likely Refusal)

Applicant's statement for months 1–5 shows a closing balance of £500–£800. In month 6 (the month of application), the balance jumps to £12,000 with a single credit entry described as 'transfer from savings'. No savings account statement is provided.

Why this fails: The sudden, unexplained jump is the clearest indicator of funds parking. The ECO has no evidence the £12,000 genuinely belongs to the applicant.

Example B: Well-Structured (Strong Application)

Applicant's statement for 6 months shows consistent salary credits of £2,800/month. Closing balance ranges from £3,200 to £5,600 across the period. One month shows a £4,000 deposit from a 'bonus payment' — applicant includes a payslip confirming the bonus and employer letter referencing it.

Why this works: The income is consistent, the balance is stable, and the one unusual credit is fully explained with supporting documents.

How to Handle Large or Unusual Deposits

If your statements contain large credits you cannot explain easily, do not ignore them. Attach supporting documents for each one:

  • Property sale: Provide the completion statement from the solicitor or land records office.
  • Gift from family: Provide a signed gift declaration letter (stating the relationship, amount, and that it does not need to be repaid) plus the donor's bank statement showing the transfer going out.
  • Business dividend or profit: Provide your company accounts, director's loan account records, or dividend payment voucher.
  • Agricultural income: Provide land ownership documents and a sale receipt from the agricultural commodity buyer.
  • Inheritance: Provide a probate document or inheritance certificate, or a notarised declaration from the estate executor.

Format: What Type of Statement Is Acceptable?

  • Official stamped statements: Printed by the bank and stamped with the branch stamp — the gold standard. Request these from your bank branch.
  • Online downloaded PDFs: Accepted by the Home Office if they clearly show the bank's name, your name, account number, and all transactions. Screenshots are not accepted.
  • Translated statements: If your statements are not in English, a certified English translation must accompany them. The translator must provide their name, credentials and a signed declaration.
  • Period covered: The standard requirement for a Visitor Visa is the last 6 months. Include the most recent statement that covers the month you are applying.

Savings Accounts and Multiple Accounts

  • If you hold funds across multiple accounts, include statements for all of them — but make sure the total is clearly presented and not double-counted.
  • Fixed deposit or term deposit accounts: include the statement showing the deposited amount and maturity date. Note: funds locked until after your travel date may not be counted as accessible funds.

If Your Sponsor Is Funding the Trip

If a UK-based friend, family member or employer is paying for your trip, you must include:

  • Their signed letter confirming they will cover your accommodation and (where applicable) your travel and living costs.
  • Their last 3 months bank statements showing they have sufficient funds.
  • Proof of their UK immigration status (BRP card, British passport, or settled status letter).

Your own bank statements are still required to show you are not destitute — the Home Office wants to see that both you and your sponsor are financially stable.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Submitting statements in a foreign currency without conversion explanation or the official exchange rate on the date of application.
  • Providing only a printout showing the current balance — statements must show full transaction history for the required period.
  • Submitting altered PDFs — this is document fraud and results in an immediate refusal and possible 10-year ban.
  • Including a statement that cuts off mid-month — include complete months only.
